For his latest project titled “LEGO”, Brazilian artist Valentino Fialdini created a series photographs of bright and colorful rooms and corridors. With the sun streaming through windows and shadows cast on the walls, it almost seems as if you’re looking at real rooms, but a closer look reveals that these sterile architectural spaces are, in fact, miniatures built with LEGO bricks and photographed by the artist himself. “Nothing is out of place in these architectures made of plastic, the spectator is the central character of these spaces based on Reinassance perspective.

What body? We have several of them; the body of anatomists and physiologists, the one science sees or discusses: this is the text of grammarians, critics, commentators, philologists (the pheno-text). But we also have a body of bliss consisting solely of erotic relations, utterly distinct from the first body: it is another contour, another nomination; thus with the text: it is no more than the fires of language. …Does the text have human form, is it a figure, an anagram of the body? Yes, but of our erotic body. The pleasure of the text is irreducible to physiological need.

It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”

- CARL SAGAN (via Advice to Writers)

melanieflood:

“… King David had a ring with the inscription: ‘Everything passes.’ When one feels sad, these words make one merry, and when one is merry, they make one sad. And I’ve acquired such a ring for myself, with Hebrew lettering, and this charm will keep me from passions. Everything passes, life, too, will pass, therefore there’s no need for anything. Or there is need only for the awareness of freedom, because when a person is free, he needs nothing, nothing, nothing. …”

These are the words that Misail’s wife writes to him in her breakup letter. “Break the thread”, she asks twice, her early enthusiasm with his simple life definitely forgotten. Misail, a natural Tolstoyan that pays dearly for his unconventionality, remains nevertheless committed to a lonely and stubborn humility. His notion of freedom is apparently very different from his wife’s. He doesn’t need to find new interests or run away, but stays put in a provincial backwater. His native town, full of ignorance and hypocrisy, is also the place where, using his own words, he can see the windowpane itself, not only the spots on it. He thinks that manual work is the source of a special insight into the meaning of truth and justice and constitutes a form of immanent salvation. Yet heroic as it is, his life of renunciation is ultimately no less solipsistic than his wife’s privileged unrootedness. Both believe their choices are a purely individual matter, and turn willfully away from any force beyond their control, as well as from their responsibilities to other people. Both their mottos leave something essential out of the equation:

If I had the desire to order myself a ring, I would choose this inscription: “Nothing passes.” I believe that nothing passes without a trace and that each of our smallest steps has significance for the present and the future.
